Summary: Conceptual modeling is a challenging task, which often results in incoherent or incomplete models. We agree that the usage of patterns can improve this task. According to this, we investigated the essence of the modeling task grounded in a well-founded ontology language. Analyzing the OntoUML language we founded that the constraints rules of its foundational ontology (i.e., UFO) should be used, in order, to define a set of rules that compress all possible arrangements of the language. This theory is based on the idea that the recursively applications of foundational ontological patterns might create a complete model, which is supposed to be fulfilling all foundational constraints of the language.
Through this theory we analyzed how these constraint rules behave in relation to each other. In other words, we investigated how the model behaves by addictions of new types, i.e., the impacts with existent classes and the constraints that should be met. Besides this, we extracted these behave in terms of formal flows which comprise all of these rules. Furthermore, we generalized these flows, in order, to define structural patterns of OntoUML (as model fragments) to be used as a catalog of patterns. Finally, we showed a tool support, which implements the entire proposed pattern.
